Pencil Drawing of a Girl

Description

Little girl in the shadow.

This is my first portrait done on extra smooth Bristol board - a practice piece, to aquaint myself with how the paper behaves.

Also my first time using a mechanical pencil for most of the work. The amount of shadow in the picture was a challenge and I digitally darkened it a bit afterwards, because so far I only have a 2B lead for my mechanical pencil, which wasn't capable of going dark enough. But the quality of my new lead (Ain Stein) was so excellent, the lead of my cheaper 4B, 6B and 8B wood pencils was just much inferior in comparison and didn't blend well enough for me to want to use it on this picture.

I'm liking the new paper. Fantastic shading and details. How did you like using the mechanical pencil? Any tips? I've never used one for artwork.
